  1. कोविड-19 शोधण्यासाठी डीजी सीएसआयआरने सांडपाणी व हवाई पाळत ठेवणे यंत्रणेवरील उपराष्ट्रपतींकडे सादरीकरण केले:

कोविड-19ची व्याप्ती शोधण्यासाठी भारतीय संसदेत सांडपाणी व हवाई पाळत ठेवण्याची यंत्रणा बसविण्याविषयी सूचित केलेले सादरीकरण आज उपराष्ट्रपती आणि अध्यक्ष, राज्यसभेला वैज्ञानिक आणि औद्योगिक संशोधन परिषदेचे महासंचालक (सीएसआयआर) डॉ शेखर सी मांडे यांनी केले.

सीएसआयआर डीजीने उपराष्ट्रपतींना माहिती दिली की सीवेज पाळत यंत्रणा लोकसंख्येमध्ये संक्रमित झालेल्या लोकांच्या संख्येचे गुणात्मक तसेच परिमाणात्मक अंदाज पुरवते आणि व्यक्तींसाठी मोठ्या प्रमाणात मोजमाप चाचण्या शक्य नसतानाही कोविड-19ची प्रगती समजण्यासाठी वापरता येऊ शकते.

वास्तविक काळात समुदायांमध्ये रोगाच्या व्याप्तीवर व्यापकपणे नजर ठेवणे हे एक उपाय आहे.

सीवेज पाळत ठेवण्याच्या अनुषंगाने सविस्तर माहिती देताना डॉ. मांडे यांनी असे निदर्शनास आणून दिले की कोविड-19 पेशंट्स त्यांच्या मल (स्टूल) मध्ये एसएआर-कोव्ह-2 शेड करतात. लक्षणे असलेल्या व्यक्तींव्यतिरिक्त, लक्षणे नसलेले लोक देखील त्यांच्या मल (स्टूल)मध्ये विषाणू टाकतात.

हैदराबाद, प्रयागराज (अलाहाबाद), दिल्ली, कोलकाता, मुंबई, नागपूर, पुडुचेरी आणि चेन्नई येथे सांडपाणी पाळत ठेवण्याबाबतचा आढावा सादर करताना ते म्हणाले की नमुन्यांची नोंद वैयक्तिक पातळीवर घेतली जात नसल्यामुळे ते संख्येचा निःपक्षपाती अंदाज लावतात. दुसरीकडे, नियमित चाचणीद्वारे प्राप्त केलेली संख्या चाचणी घेतलेल्या व्यक्तींच्या संख्येवर अवलंबून असते.

डॉ. मांडे म्हणाले की, कोविड-19च्या सांडपाणीवर पाळत ठेवणे हे आजारातील सध्याच्या साथीच्या रोगाचे ज्ञान समजण्यासाठीच उपयुक्त नाही तर भविष्यात कोविड-19 चे उद्रेक लवकर व सुलभतेने शोधण्यासाठी अपरिहार्य साधन ठरेल.

DG CSIR makes presentation to Vice President on Sewage and Air Surveillance System to detect COVID-19:
DG suggests setting up of the system in Indian Parliament.
A presentation suggesting the setting up of sewage and air surveillance system in the Indian Parliament to find the prevalence of COVID-19 was made to the Vice President and Chairman, Rajya Sabha today by the Director-General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr. Shekhar C Mande.

The CSIR DG informed the Vice President that sewage surveillance provides qualitative as well as quantitative estimate of the number of people infected in a population and could be used to understand the progression of COVID-19 even when mass scales tests for individuals are not possible.

It is a measure to comprehensively monitor the prevalence of the disease in communities in real time.

Elaborating on the relevance of sewage surveillance, Dr. Mande pointed out that COVID-19 patients shed SAR-CoV- 2 in stools. Apart from symptomatic individuals, asymptomatic people also shed the virus in their stools.

Presenting data of the sewage surveillance carried out to find the trend of infection in Hyderabad, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Puducherry and Chennai, he said it provides an unbiased estimate of numbers since the sampling is not done at individual level. On the other hand, the numbers obtained by regular testing depend on the number of individuals tested.

Dr. Mande said that sewage surveillance of COVID-19 would be relevant not only to understand the present epidemiology of the disease but would be an indispensable tool for early and easier detection of future COVID-19 outbreaks.
